1 Clarity and consistency

One of the main purposes of a mood board is to communicate your vision and direction for your fashion illustration project. However, if your mood board is unclear, inconsistent, or confusing, it can lead to misunderstandings, revisions, or dissatisfaction with the final outcome. To avoid this, you need to make sure that your mood board has a clear and consistent theme, that it reflects your design brief and objectives, and that it uses relevant and high-quality images and elements. You also need to explain your mood board to your clients, collaborators, or instructors, and get their feedback and approval before moving on to the next stage.

2 Balance and harmony

Another important aspect of a mood board is to create a balance and harmony among the different elements that you include. This means that you need to consider the proportions, contrasts, colors, and styles of the images and elements that you select, and how they work together to create a cohesive and appealing mood board. You also need to avoid overcrowding or underutilizing your mood board space, and use white space, grids, or frames to organize and structure your mood board. A balanced and harmonious mood board will help you create a more effective and attractive fashion illustration.

It’s very important that your mood board be cohesive, but also provides you/your team inspiration throughout the project. It’s something that you’ll return to again and again to help stay focused in your work. Starting out with a key concept and then adding shapes, color, and text to your mood board can help create new or more developed ideas organically.

3 Originality and creativity

A mood board is not a copy-paste job. It is a creative expression of your own style, personality, and ideas for your fashion illustration project. Therefore, you need to avoid using clichéd, generic, or outdated images and elements that do not reflect your unique voice and vision. You also need to avoid copying or plagiarizing other people's mood boards or fashion illustrations, as this can damage your reputation and credibility. Instead, you need to use your mood board as a source of inspiration and experimentation, and explore different possibilities and combinations that suit your theme and concept. A original and creative mood board will help you stand out and impress your audience.

A mood board is absolutely not a copy-paste job. I find the most impactful mood boards to be those that are clear in setting the tone with a combination of things like images of backgrounds, color, graphics, textures and key visual cues that says it all. The least amount of things on the things on a mood board can really help make it focused. If you have two images that sort of say the same, I recommend only using one. Then consider how this mood board is unique by making sure it is different enough from previous ones to have a reason for being.

  • A mood board is not a copy/paste job. The mood board should not only convey the message, but it should also reflect you as a designer/illustrator.You should look at different examples for inspiration, but this should also help you with your creativity with your mood board. When it comes to this, I always look at Pinterest and Canva for fashion mood board ideas.

4 Flexibility and adaptability

A mood board is not a fixed or final product. It is a dynamic and evolving tool that can change and improve as your fashion illustration project progresses. Therefore, you need to be flexible and adaptable when working with your mood board, and be open to new ideas, feedback, and changes that might arise along the way. You also need to update and refine your mood board as you develop your sketches, drafts, and final illustrations, and make sure that they are aligned and consistent with your mood board. A flexible and adaptable mood board will help you achieve a better and smoother fashion illustration process.

5 Time and effort

A mood board is not a quick or easy task. It requires time and effort to research, collect, select, edit, and arrange the images and elements that you want to include in your mood board. You also need to consider the format, size, and presentation of your mood board, and how it will fit your purpose and audience. Therefore, you need to plan and schedule your mood board creation and use, and allocate enough time and resources to complete it. You also need to avoid procrastination, distraction, or perfectionism that might delay or hinder your mood board work. A well-planned and well-executed mood board will help you save time and effort in your fashion illustration project.
